Deep Dish Theater Company presents

"Boy Gets Girl"

CHAPEL HILL— “Boy Gets Girl,” a contemporary drama by Rebecca Gilman, will be presented by Deep Dish Theater Company from Thursday, October 28, through Sunday, November 20. A sometimes funny, sometimes frightening look at a journalist and a blind date that goes terribly wrong, the play is directed by Hope Hynes.

Deep Dish is located in Chapel Hill’s University Mall, located on Estes Drive and US 15-501. Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. (The Sunday matinee on October 31 will start at 4 p.m.)  There will also be a special early show at 7:30 on Wednesday, November 17. For reservations and information, call 968-1515.  Tickets for all performances are $14, $12 for seniors, and $10 for students.  Thursday, November 4 is “Cheap Dish Night,” when all tickets will be $5; no advance reservations will be taken for that performance.

Discussions of the play will follow the performances on Sunday, November 7, and Thursday, November 11; the performance on Sunday, November 14, will be followed by a talk with the production’s design team.  The Deep Dish Book Selection for this production is “The Lovely Bones,” by Alice Sebold, and a discussion of the book, free and open to the public, will be led by Evelyn Daniel and David Carr prior to the performance on Thursday, November 18.

“Boy Gets Girl,” which TIME Magazine hailed as the Best Play of 2000, concerns Theresa Bedell (played by Sherida McMullan), a magazine writer who is unexpectedly beset by an ardent suitor (Jason Lord).   Her colleagues (Al Singer, David Shouse, and Heather J. Hackford), a sleazy filmmaker (Mark Jeffrey Miller), and eventually a police detective (Jane Hallstrom) all offer Theresa advice, but her situation becomes increasingly dangerous, and she soon finds herself in a desperate struggle to retain control over her own life.  The play contains adult language and situations.

Playwright Gilman is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Prince Prize for Commissioning New Work, the Roger L. Stevens Award from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, and the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright.  Her other plays include “The Glory of Living” (for which she was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize), “Spinning Into Butter,” and “Blue Surge.”

Director Hope Hynes is returning to Deep Dish, where she appeared in the acclaimed 2001 production of the terrorist drama “Cat’s-Paw.”  She recently directed Tim Blake Nelson’s “Eye of God” at Peace College.  The design team for “Boy Gets Girl” includes Christa Devitt (sets), Judy Chang (costumes), Steve Dubay (lights), Doug Edmunds and Danny Tauber (sound), and Devra Thomas (properties). Emma Nadeau is the stage manager.

“Gilman's plays are like prisms,” says Hynes.  “She refracts a social issue through a personal event and then takes you through the spectrum of subtle colorings that are contained within it.  In ‘Boy Gets Girl,’ she hits you with the white light terror of a stalker's obsession, but then she displays a rainbow of societal values that are part and parcel of the way we develop relationships.”
